NYC Announces Solitary Confinement Compensation Fund

On April 19, 2023, the City of New York announced the creation of a $53 million fund to compensate inmates at Rikers island who were improperly sent to solitary confinement. Individuals who were placed in solitary, also called “The Box”, “SHU” or “punitive segregation”, may be entitled to financial compensation, if they were sent to solitary without a proper hearing.
